How to Install

General Overlay Installation Guide

Before you begin: Check the product page and AFD Installation Hub for any product-specific placement, wet/dry method, or material notes. Product-specific instructions always override this general guide.

Tools Recommended: Microfiber towel, soap and water or 70% isopropyl alcohol, felt-tip squeegee or padded glove, and a heat gun or blow dryer.

1. Clean + Fully Dry

Wash the installation area with soap and water or clean it with 70% isopropyl alcohol where appropriate. Remove dirt, wax, oils, and residue. Wipe the entire area completely dry, including seams, edges, and crevices.

2. Dry-Fit + Align

Before exposing the adhesive, compare the overlay to the target surface and confirm orientation. Use the lens edge, body line, reflector shape, or emblem contour as your placement guide.

3. Apply + Smooth

Peel only as much backing as needed to begin. Lightly tack an easy-to-identify reference point, then work progressively across the surface. Use your fingers, padded glove, or felt squeegee to apply controlled pressure from the anchor point outward. Avoid unnecessary stretching.

4. Post-Heat + Seal

Once placement is correct, warm the installed overlay until it feels hot but not scalding to the touch. Re-press the perimeter, curves, recesses, and wrapped edges while warm. Post-heating is important for long-term adhesion.

5. Remove Transfer Tape / Protective Layer — If Applicable

If your overlay includes transfer tape or a protective top layer, remove it only after the vinyl is fully positioned and post-heated. Peel it back slowly at a low angle while watching the installed vinyl. Skip this step if your product does not use a top layer.

Wet vs. Dry Installation: Only use a wet-install method when the exact product instructions specifically call for it. Do not add water or slip solution under a dry-install or air-release overlay.

After Installation: Allow the adhesive time to set and avoid washing the vehicle for approximately 24 hours.
