01 / Universal method
The four steps behind a clean install.
These four fundamentals cover the installation workflow used across most AFD overlays. Your package insert includes the same process, while the exact product page remains the source of truth for wet/dry method, placement and fitment-specific exceptions.
Peel + align
Confirm orientation first. Peel only as much backing as needed, hover the film over the target and match the intended lens, trim or body line.
Apply + smooth
Commit pressure gradually. Smooth from the center or anchor point outward using fingers or a felt-edged squeegee to avoid trapped air.
Post-heat
After placement is correct, warm the installed film to hot but not scalding to the touch, then re-press edges, recesses and wrapped areas.

Remove transfer tape / protective layer — only if your product has one.
Conditional step
Once the vinyl is fully set and post-heated, peel the top layer back slowly at a low angle while watching the installed vinyl. Many overlays do not use transfer tape, so skip this step when it does not apply.
Wet vs. dry is product-specific.
Do not assume a curved surface should be installed wet. Some AFD materials use air-release adhesive and are designed for a dry installation. Always follow the method shown on the exact product page when it differs from this general guide.

03 / Daytime running lights
DRL overlays

DRL overlays are long, visually exposed pieces where small placement differences are easy to notice. Use the lens contour as your reference and keep the film relaxed while setting the full path.
Dry-fit the full DRL path
Hold the overlay over the lens and verify left/right orientation before exposing adhesive.
Set one reference point
Use the clearest corner or endpoint as the anchor, then confirm the strip naturally follows the lens.
Lay the film progressively
Work along the DRL a few inches at a time. Avoid pulling the strip tight just to make it reach.
Post-heat the full perimeter
Warm the completed strip and re-press both ends, curves and any recessed portions.

04 / Headlight amber sections

Amber-delete pieces should visually disappear into the headlight once installed. Dry-fit first, use the amber lens boundary as the primary reference and avoid stretching the precut shape to compensate for an early placement error.

Anchor the cleanest corner
Set one corner or straight edge lightly, then verify the opposite end still follows the lens boundary.
Smooth without over-stretching
Use even pressure. If placement is wrong, lift and reset instead of stretching the shape into position.

05 / Front + rear reflectors
Reflector overlays

Easy
Reflectors are compact but often have a recessed edge. Center the visible face first, then finish the perimeter progressively. If the overlay is designed to wrap, use controlled heat and firm final pressure around the edge.

07 / Trim + pinstripe accents

Long accent pieces look best when the panel line controls the installation instead of stretch. Establish start, middle and end references before committing the strip, then lay it a few inches at a time with minimal tension.

09 / Final checks
Before you call it finished.
Most lifting and alignment issues can be caught in a final two-minute inspection while the film is still warm and easy to re-press.
Do
- Verify orientation and install method before peeling backing.
- Install on a clean surface that is fully dry and free of dust, wax and residue.
- Use light, controlled heat to help film conform only where needed.
- Post-heat finished edges until hot but not scalding to the touch.
- Re-press the perimeter after heating.
Avoid
- Using a wet method unless the exact product instructions call for it.
- Over-stretching a precut piece to compensate for incorrect placement.
- Pulling narrow accents or long DRL strips tight.

10 / Troubleshooting
Quick fixes for a cleaner finish.
If the install is not going as expected, start here before forcing the material. Most issues can be corrected by cleaning again, relieving tension, repositioning, or finishing the adhesive with controlled post-heat.

Overlay won’t stick
Clean the area again and make sure it is completely dry and free of wax, soap, alcohol or residue. Re-press firmly, then post-heat the installed film and press the perimeter again while warm.

Bubbles under the film
Work from the center outward with a finger or felt squeegee. Guide larger trapped air toward the nearest edge instead of pressing it deeper into the film. Avoid puncturing the overlay unless the exact product instructions specifically call for it.

Alignment looks off
If firm pressure has not been applied yet, lift gently and reset the piece. Use the visible lens edge, body line, trim break or emblem shape as your guide rather than stretching the precut overlay to compensate.

Edges are lifting
Re-press the lifting perimeter and post-heat until the film feels hot but not scalding to the touch. While the area is still warm, press the edge firmly into the contour and hold it briefly as it cools.

Wrinkles or creases
Lift carefully before the material is fully set, relax the film, and reapply with less tension. Add only enough controlled warmth to help the material conform. Do not pull a precut piece tight to make it fit.
